Matter of Balance

What is A Matter of Balance?

Falling is a real fear for many people, especially if you’ve already had a fall. A child tripping on the playground may have a scraped knee and feelings of embarrassment. As we age, though, falling can cause serious injury, require hospitalization, and may even result in death. So of course we start to have a fear of falling!
We may stop exercising because we don’t want to fall.  We may decline invitations to go out to restaurants or go shopping because we don’t want to fall.  We may stop doing a lot of things because we don’t want to fall.
It's time to take charge of falls and take charge of your life!
In this 8-session workshop, you will learn to:
  • View falls as controllable
  • Set goals for safely increasing activity to live life to the fullest
  • Make changes to reduce risk of falling at home
  • Exercise to increase strength and balance

Is this Matter of Balance for you?

You may benefit from this workshop if you are:
  • Concerned about falls
  • Have fallen in the past
  • Restrict activities because of fear of falling
  • Interested in improving balance, flexibility, and strength
  • Age 60 or older, able to walk, and able to problem-solve

What will you do during the Matter of Balance workshop?

Each two-hour session is led by a trained Matter of Balance coach. The class size is limited to 15 participants because small group discussions and problem-solving are an important part of the workshop. You'll learn how to change your thoughts about falls to help you overcome fear of falling, take steps to prevent falls, and learn exercises that will increase strength and flexibility and improve balance.
