Powerful Tools for Caregivers

What is Powerful Tools for Caregivers?

Being a caregiver is a rewarding experience - but it also comes with many challenges. You may experience many difficult emotions, such as guilt, anger, or depression. You may forget to take care of yourself. You may not feel confident in your ability to balance your caregiving duties with other responsibilities. Or you may not know what community resources are available to help you out.In this 6-session workshop, you will improve:
  • Self-care behaviors, such as increased exercise, relaxation techniques, and remembering to take care of your own health through regular medical check-ups
  • Management of emotions to reduce guilt, anger, and depression
  • Self-efficacy to increase your confidence in coping with caregiver demands
  • Use of community resources to increase your utilization of local services that can reduce caregiving demands

Is this Powerful Tools for Caregivers for you?

You may benefit from this workshop if you care for someone with chronic health conditions, such as:
  • Alzheimer's disease or dementia
  • Cancer
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease)
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Other chronic health conditions

What will you do during the Powerful Tools for Caregivers workshop?

Each 90 - 120 minute session is led by trained lay leaders. The class size is limited to 15 participants because small group discussions and problem-solving are an important part of the workshop. You'll develop skills to practice self-care; identify and reduce personal stress; communicate feelings, needs, and concerns; communicate in challenging situations; learn from your emotions; and master caregiving decisions.
